A New Web Series, A Newfound Fear

FirstDates-Poster-Long-Dark-Blue

Well, I’ve been gone for a while, huh? I could blame it on the fact that I’ve been busy, but really that’s no excuse. One cannot let the ways of the world and the trivial natures of the day get in the way of one’s blog, because if we did, blogs would cease to exists…and we wouldn’t want that.

So what have I been busy doing? Today’s picture should give it away…to some extent. I just realized that the banner I’ve created doesn’t really let you know what “First Dates” is (check out the trailer!). Someone could look at that and think “First Dates” is a dating app set to launch in the Google Play Store in late July. But to give the 2 or 3 people who still read this blog the inside scoop, “First Dates” is a web series. Continue reading

Media Man Podcast #35 – Super Bowl Ratings, Ben Sherwood & Web Series

Media Man Podcast, Media, Showbiz, Entertainment, TechThis wasn’t exactly my best episode. I couldn’t stop coughing. I completely butchered Ben Sherwood’s name be calling him Ben Sherman the whole time. And in my talk of the Super Bowl, I accidentally derailed into a sports radio show for about 37 seconds. Other than that though…solid job!

HBO Will Have to Cannibalize Itself by Going OTT

HBO

As you may or may not know, I’m a big believer of the fact that HBO and Netflix can co-exist in a world where they both are offering an OTT option. Thus, HBO’s decision to go OTT in 2015 is of no surprise to me, just as it is likely of no surprise to most in the industry, as a digital world seems to be where the future of media resides.

That said, the Jeff Zucker term “trading analog dollars for digital pennies” is something we should be thinking about as HBO sets up to release HBO Go as an OTT option early next year. Sure, with Netflix’s growing domestic and international subscriber base, HBO has to go OTT in order to achieve the scale that will allow it to competitively pay/bid for content with Netflix. However, in the short-term, allowing users to get HBO via a digital option could prove costly for HBO. So contrary to what HBO topper Richard Plepler might tell you, cannibalization is a coming! Three Ideas to Make TV More Profitable and Better

TVIt’s not often that I go around trying to tell Television networks what they should do, but recently, on an episode of the Media Man Podcast, I did just that, when I insinuated that the TV News entities should start ripping off “The Daily Show.”

Just think about it…John Oliver took the bones of “The Daily Show” to HBO, and he’s now one of the most revered men in news and comedy. Yes, it would be a very copycat move for NBC or MSNBC to do that, and I know that CNN has tried doing something similar in the past, but what’s wrong with partaking in a copycat league?

Anyway, my ideas don’t stop at ripping off Jon Stewart. I have other great ideas that aren’t my own, too. Let’s take a look at the top 3… Continue reading
